The below letter has been tracked back to posting on several discussion boards and blogs. A few say it originated in Texas, others have been changed to other states or even the military. A few take it back to essentially the same law that was proposed by Governor Engler in Michigan a few years ago. The one quoted below cites Oregon.
Its source doesn't matter in the least.
While it is an interesting idea, and would probably work, it will never be done.
First, the ACLU and the NAACP would scream bloody murder about how it is racist to assume that all welfare recipients are junkies. The Democrats would cry foul about how the evil Conservatives are trying to oppress their constituents, even if it is a Democrat that proposes it, as they did when Mr. Charles Wrangle, senior senator from New York and a die hard Liberal Democrat, proposed re-instating the draft last year.
Again, it seems only fair to test everybody who gets a check from the government: Teachers, Postal Workers, Soldiers, Bus Drivers, CONGRESSMEN, and Welfare Recipients. But it will simply never be done for political reasons.

I think this makes a very valuable point!Urine Test
I have a question, not only for Douglas County, but for the entire state of Oregon.
Like a lot of folks in this state, I have a job. I work, they pay me. I pay my taxes and the government distributes my taxes as they see fit. In order to get that paycheck. I am required to pass a random urine test, which I have no problem with.
What I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to people who don't have to pass a urine test. Shouldn't one have to pass a urine test to get a welfare check, because I have to pass one to earn it for them?
Please understand, I have no problem with helping people get back on their feet. I do, on the other hand, have a problem with helping someone sit on their ass. Could you imagine how much money the state would save if people had to pass a urine test to get a public assistance check.
