This site is not about the Desk's Ego, and it does not think of itself as a blatant self promoter or, in WebSpeak, Blogger.
There's really no other way to put it than to simply state it directly and with examples.
- The Desk rarely uses the First Person Pronoun in Anything on this site. I, Me, Myself, This Writer. And Unlike Rush Limbaugh and some Radio Personalities, it does not like to hear itself talk, or type, that much. And it has never said, "It's good for America when I'm right."
- The Desk is not about self-promotion. In fact, the Desk's Real Name is seldom even used on anything, although it is here (on the Copyright Page and Site Registry for one). The Site Name is not the Desk's name (a la www.jamescampion.com and Drudge), and its picture, while posted, takes some looking for to find. So the Desk is NOT HIDING behind a pseudonym, since its real name and photo are here, it is simply not in it for celebrity or renown or whatever.
- The Desk writes something like ninety percent of the site. Unlike the Drudge Report where his site is simply a collection of links to everybody else while he posts maybe one column a week. The Essays, Fiction, Religious Articles, Everything, except what is in the Others/Friends of the Desk area, is the Desk's Own Work.
- The Desk doesn't have a posted hit counter, and its guest-book, when it works, is so far down the main page some people don't know it is even there. While the Desk had over a quarter of a million hits in 2002 it doesn't post its daily counts like some of the others and boast about how many readers it has per month. To be honest, the Desk itself doesn't really care. The Desk's Host cares. Deeply. And they have increased the Desk's bandwidth charges accordingly, twice in the last year alone.
- The Desk is NOT SELLING ANYTHING. Nothing on the Site is for sale, including the Site Itself. The Desk doesn't have a link to buy one of its books, a CD, a movie, or anything else. You cannot Join the Desk's Gold Club, or the Premium Member Area, or use your AVS ID to get to something. The Desk Doesn't Charge For It... it doesn't pay for it either but that's another story.
- The Desk doesn't produce a weekly, biweekly, monthly, or whatever newsletter named after itself as does the others including G. Gordon Liddy. It doesn't have an actual mailing list, a record of readers or corespondents, or even any idea of how many individuals it has been in touch with. They way it sends out updates is to use names on other people's emails, and those that have written in and then replied to the Desk's reply to their letter. And yes, the Desk replies to all emails with return addresses, it does not use an auto-responder (the one on the guest book doesn't count since it only works after dark on even numbered Tuesdays).
- The Desk doesn't do any unnecessary self-aggrandizing. There is NO Award Page and things like that. Yes, it had to post this article to defend itself against an unwarranted charge by somebody that doesn't know what they are talking about. But other than that, the Desk avoids bragging in most cases, in fact, it is rather surprised with the success and recognition it has gotten. And No, it is NOT going to post the vast majority of notes, tributes, letters, and awards it has gotten unless the writer asks it to.
- The Desk also does not use cookies, flash, pop-ups, -unders, -overs, stealth ads, sleepers, flashing banners, screaming ads, or canned music. It has been said before, it is now going to be said again. There is a certain resemblance to a weekly newspaper about the Desk site, and that is the way it is going to stay. Weeklies had limited color, no sound, nothing overly obnoxious and cute. No, the Desk is not cute at all.
- Once Again... the Desk is NOT Getting PAID for THIS! At All. Period. Although donations are cheerfully accepted... cash, negotiable bonds, stocks, real estate, vehicles, capital equipment, food, sexual favors, used sports equipment, etc. etc...
So to call the Desk a Blogger is simply proving that whatever else you have done, you haven't read this site at all.
